The initial day of the festival took place on Saturday in Addis Ababa. On Sunday, celebrants journeyed to a nearby town, a settlement close to the main city.

Even though the festival has its roots in native spiritual practices, it is now celebrated by the bulk of the Oromo people, without consideration for their religion.
