A senior officer that leaped to the assistance of a partner that was assaulted by a knifeman was granted the Royal Recognition for Bravery.

Sergeant Tim Ansell fought with 27-yr-old Jacob Brown following he pressed a weapon to the throat of his partner Sergeant Marc Foster.

Brown began the violence as the policemen and their colleague, PC Marcus Wolstencroft, were talking to a motorist following a traffic accident in Whalley Range in July 2023.

Brown knifed and cut the two Sgt Ansell and Sergeant Foster before PC Wolstencroft stopped him with a electric weapon.

"Policeman attacked," PC Wolstencroft could be heard saying over his communication device.

Officer-mounted and dashboard camera footage released by the police department showed Brown, wearing in dark clothing with a head covered, run up to Sergeant Foster from behind with a knife extended.

He struck the policeman who tripped and went down to the pavement, before Sergeant Ansell stepped in and tried to wrestle him to the ground although being repeatedly struck with the blade.

PC Wolstencroft drew his Taser and awaited a safe opportunity, ending the fight to an end.

Sergeant Ansell stated audibly: "I need assistance on my throat here, I got knifed in the neck."

Sgt Ansell sustained multiple lacerations to his neck and further cuts to his limbs and body, while Sergeant Foster received knife wounds.

The department stated Sgt Foster utilized his palms to control his partner's bleeding before paramedics arrived.

This most recent honor follows after the trio of policemen received organizational Valor Recognitions in late 2023 and the John Egerton Bravery Award from the area officer association in April 2024.

They further earned a North West Valor Recognition in July 2024.

"The efforts of each policeman in the end saved one another and ensured no civilians experienced any wounds."

Brown was sentenced to an secure medical confinement in spring 2024, according to officials.
